After the Sandstorms

March 29th, 2010

my view from my apartment. Pretty ugly on that Saturday a week ago. Woke up as usual about 4am, looked out the window and saw what looked like a layer of snow. After dawn, I realized that I was looking at a layer of brown sand…went outside anyway that day because I had friends in town from Shanghai. They wanted to go to the Great Wall. But the sandstorm was so heavy, I told them they may not see much of the wall! We did not go…Went around the city instead..

But the past week, the weather has been clear. I am ready to go rollerblading soon..pulled out my skates and I an ready for another season of skating!

Went to YuanMingYuan (Old Summer Palace) over the past weekend. Had not been there before and I am looking for new places, new experiences, and new friends!

That’s the maze at YuanMingYuan. Amazing to see people try to get to the center. It is not as easy as you think!

I have to tell you about a graveyard.  Remember on one of my posts I mentioned about satellite radio that never happened in China? I worked for WorldSpace preparing for a very modern version of radio for China. Well, they went bankrupt and it never happened. Last week, WorldSpace was allowed to send their 2 satellites into a higher orbit. It is a graveyard for old satellites. They can’t just let satellites fall back to Earth! RIP WorldSpace. A great idea, with incredible potential…now in the satellite graveyard! I didn’t even know there was a graveyard in outer space! Sounds like an idea for a future movie like Avatar?

I will go to Guangzhou in a few weeks to again be the co-host of the China Daily 21st Century National English speaking competition, April 8-10 and after that I will go to Hong Kong for a few days.  I always look forward to this event. I am proud to be associated with such a prestigious English speaking gathering. This year, in the south of China.

Well, they have not been sent to higher orbit yet as I am still able to listen to BBC and NPR as of today 29 March 2010. I suspect the court application to get them to be parked was a negotiating tool used to blackmail potential buyers. I agree, the technology has so much potential, but mismanagement and a lack of a plan really messed this company badly. A quick discussion with the African Union should have mustered enough money to keep the project going on a basis of educating people in the darkest Africa.
I have had the joy of owning 3 Worldspace devices and have been surprised on more than one occasion by receiving signal indoors. Very sad indeed.
