Special thanks to Yuan Yuan, my last co-host on Joy FM who was there to do the interview; my publishers, China Radio TV University Press; Wen Wei who translated the book; and all who stopped by. Some old friends and new friends!

(The book is available at Page One and online on Amazon, China and soon on Dangdang.com and other outlets in China.)

I am glad that the Chinese book is out now. So many people have asked me about it. Hope you enjoy the read.

Chinese New Year will be here soon. I will probably stay in Beijing and do some more writing. And hang out with friends who will stay in Beijing. Hope it’s a good holiday for you!

And you can always write to me here. I’ve heard from some people I haven’t seen for a long time, from the Hong Kong days. Thanks for remembering and staying in touch.

Well, Welcome to 2012! Jan 13th, 7-9 pm, at Page One in China World Mall 3 (just below the movie theater,) I will do a book signing for my new book, 三毛的回声——一个美国 DJ 在中国, Echoes of Sanmao from an American DJ in China. My memoir contains a chapter about my relationship with San Mao. Hope you’ll stop by and say hello. It’s a beautiful bookstore in Guo Mao!

Jan 4th passed, the day that San Mao, “Echo,” passed 21 years ago. I didn’t want to post anything on that day. The reason is that my autobiography, in Chinese, will come out next week. It will be on www.dangdang.com in China and in bookstores. 20 years ago, Echo urged me to write my autobiography. She said she’d help me with the book. Actually, like an echo through 20 years of time, she is helping me get it known. I kept my promise to her to write it, and to write a chapter about her; she kept her promise to help me get it known. I know that San Mao was a top ten topic on sina.weibo on the 4th. It was not a day to mention my book. That was a day to remember her.

Well,

Has it been a month since the last update?

Sorry, a lot has been happening…Had friends in town recently. Always good to see old friends, especially when they come to visit Beijing. It was one after another.

Just after Thanksgiving, I was in a taxi. A car cut in front from a side street and the taxi crashed right into the car! I was in the front seat but luckily I have made it a practice to wear the seat belt. I suggest you do the same. I walked out of the taxi with only had a scratch on my leg. It could have been much worse!

Let’s see, what else?

I am working on setting up an English speaking coaching program. More on that in the near future.

Also, I am helping pass along a legend that I heard about many years ago while in Hong Kong. More on that also in the near future.

Many have asked about my autobiography in Chinese. It has been printed and should be available at stores and through online sites in just a few days. Just search for my Chinese name and you’ll find it. 李柯

It is exciting to finally have this book out. It covers things you never knew about me, even if you have heard me on the radio for years. I do hope you like it. I put a lot of work into it. I just imagined writing my story for my friends, so yes, there are some personal things in it that won’t be very personal anymore. But I consider you guys to be my friends!

A radio program is usually one-dimensional. This isn’t!

Feel free to contact me through this website if you wish. The email from here does get to me.

And there will be a few book signings. The publishers said that they will happen in January. I’ll let you know when I know.

I celebrated a birthday recently. Didn’t want a big party. Had a dinner with some friends. Simple and warm. Very low-key.

No gifts. Just a lot of smiles and Chinese food.

Got any plans for the upcoming holidays?

I will be here in Beijing. 2 New Years coming up. I think I will be here for both.

I will try to write more soon.

Stay warm…

Rick

However, that concert was cancelled for some reason and Pepsi had promoted a contest to win tickets to MJ in HK. So Pepsi, very respectably, decided to fly the winners to Taipei. I think there were about 150 people. I was going along as part of FM Select radio. I was also known as a pretty good photographer so the large size glossy magazine called “B” asked me to take some pictures of his concert. I joined photographers who had come from around the world. When Michael appeared I found myself so close that my elbows were on the stage and he was just a few feet away. I had to back up to get a good shot! That concert was..well…one of the best I had ever attended. And being that close to the stage with my camera made me feel like I was caputuring just a quick reflection of one of the best talents the world has ever known! RIP

A few days ago, a friend of mine who works for a satellite radio operation in the US asked me how the satellite radio project that he knew I had worked for was progressing in China? I had to tell him that I have no idea at this point…I have not worked there for 2 years. In fact, very few people knew about my work in this area…so I will share it with you guys now…In addition to and apart from my FM radio work, I worked for a company which has satellite space above China…and it would have provided at least 60 different radio channels available to all of China! Maybe even more channels! And no commercials! Very exciting! Like XM Radio or Sirius Radio in the US (you can look them up online.) I worked as the music channel consultant/director for this operation for a few years and my job was to design and execute at least 20 music channels. Each channel would provide a specialized kind of music. Some with music from other countries; some with music from China. 24 hours a day! Well, as I told my friend, after 10 years it has still not happened. I did design the channels but did not get the chance to execute them. Very frustrating! If it does happen, and perhaps it will someday, I would still love to be a part of it. But for now, as far as I know, it is not happening like we planned years ago. In the US, it is the most exciting radio happening now! Hopefully, some day China will have this kind of radio option available to everyone who loves music and and a modern way to enjoy something much more advanced than “regular AM/FM radio!”
